Halloween Celebrations - Past & Present
Memories of Halloweens Past in a Small Alberta Community
Growing up in a small Alberta community in Canada was a delightful experience, especially during Halloween. Recently, I had a conversation with my childhood friends of 66 years, reminiscing about the good old days. Back then, we never worried about tainted candy or malicious objects that could harm us. Instead, we eagerly wandered the neighborhood with our pillowcases, filled to the brim with tasty treats, returning home to empty them only to venture out again for more trick-or-treating. We would spend the rest of the evening sorting our candy haul into piles, grouping similar candies together.
My costumes were always hand-sewn by my mom or grandma, and I cherish the photos of myself dressed up as a clown, Puss n Boots, and even a Dutch girl.
The town was always buzzing with activity, particularly with the teenagers, who were known for egging police cars and placing hay bales and an outhouse in the middle of a downtown intersection, then light them on fire. We all knew the game seemed to be dropping them off, starting them on fire and not getting caught. Everyone would try to figure out who did it. I wonder if those shenanigans still happen there.
Modern-Day Halloween Celebrations
Halloween has transformed into a joyous occasion for families to celebrate together. Parents often take on a playful spirit, joining in on the trick-or-treating fun by matching their attire to their children's costumes. Communities have also started organizing block parties, providing a unique opportunity for families to come together and enjoy the holiday festivities. It's not uncommon to see homes decorated with eerie decor, as families compete to create the spookiest yard on the block.
One beloved tradition is the Switch Witch, where kids are allowed to indulge in a few pieces of candy before leaving the rest of their loot out on the kitchen table. While they sleep soundly, a good witch visits to replace their candy with a small gift, like a toy, book, or warm clothing.
