Hello friends,
Sometimes, the biggest barrier to dreaming about new possibilities is the weight of everything already on our plates. When life feels full—whether it’s tasks, responsibilities, or even emotions—it can be difficult to access our imagination and creativity. Before we can invite in new possibilities, we need to clear space for them.
A Personal Reflection
After I hit send on my newsletter this past Saturday announcing the March theme, I hit a brick wall. The door to my whispers, nudges, and sparks of inspiration seemed to be stuck and wouldn’t open—until this morning!
I found it difficult to think about possibilities because my mind was cluttered with unfinished tasks and upcoming responsibilities. My desk was covered with income tax papers, my trip to Italy was on my mind, and I was preparing for my mother’s funeral service in May. I even started having dreams of forgotten and misplaced things—arriving at the airport without my passport, forgetting my mother’s urn when we arrived at her service, and writing my tribute to her last minute as guests were arriving. Clearly, something had to give.
To create space for clarity, I started organizing. I placed all my major tasks into separate baskets: one for Italy, one for my mom’s service, and one for income tax. I also decided to let go of a photo display idea for my mom’s funeral, recognizing that simplifying would bring me more peace. Additionally, my thoughts kept wandering to a potential move after my trip, adding another layer of uncertainty. But at my core, all I really wanted to do was focus on my passion—writing, creating, and growing Gather & Pause. That’s where the possibilities felt endless.
Just acknowledging this and taking action to organize my responsibilities gave me the mental space to breathe and dream again.
A Simple Exercise to Clear Space for Possibility
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and unable to dream, try this process:
1. Name What’s Weighing on You
Take a moment to jot down all the things occupying your mind—tasks, worries, upcoming plans, unfinished projects.
2. Sort & Organize
Use baskets, totes, boxes, or even labeled folders to separate and categorize your responsibilities. Giving them a designated space can help clear your mental clutter.
3. Let Go of What You Can
Ask yourself: Is there anything I can release or simplify? If something is draining you but isn’t essential, consider letting it go or finding a simpler way to handle it.
4. Pause & Breathe
Once you’ve organized and cleared some space, sit quietly for a moment. Take a deep breath. Notice what thoughts or dreams begin to arise naturally. Possibility emerges when we create room for it.
Final Thought
In my newsletter, I suggested that week 1 of our theme Awaken Possibilities is about simply noticing what’s emerging. Making space is what emerged first for me. It isn’t about eliminating responsibilities—it’s about organizing and prioritizing so that our minds have the freedom to dream. When we clear the clutter, we allow possibility to take root.
What is one thing you can clear or organize today to make space for your next possibility? My answer to this question is to work on a cover for my journal later today. This will be the place my inspirations can live. I’ll share it with you when I’m done.

I’m in total overwhelm with severe bronchitis wreaking havoc with my breathing ability. Elderly father in memory care calling me and saying his wallet is stolen and I can’t go look for it… responsibilities up the kazoo… so I physically cleaned up both “nests” in my sacred space. Put away books waiting to be read, journals half way in progress… so I can focus on lining up my monsters and prioritizing them so I know where to begin. I’m a big believer in following the song lyrics John Lennon wrote to his then 4 year old son: “Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans.” For me, this week my biggest challenge seems to be going along with “life” as I cannot delve into my other plans. May we know this hard lesson and not let it disrupt our peace of mind. ☺️
Thanks Kathy. This was so good and so human. Thank you for being honest. I find that frequently, it's those of us that are working to hold space for others and at the same time, we need to hold space for ourselves.
